Open Quote Anyone who visits Sandburg knows it is a great place to learn and grow. The data sets used, which suggest declining proficiency, miss major considerations. First, Sandburg has a Dual Language Immersion program (Spanish / English) growing throughout the building, with more than 50% of the children learning in Spanish for most of each day (the tests reported here are only in English!). The data used here also has been "NAEP-ized" (retroactively re-calibrated to a more rigorous bar) and aligned to the newer, more rigorous Common Core State Standads. Visit the school! Learn about how they show the 2nd highest rate of growth in literacy in Madison (and growth targets are more rigorous for children who are not proficient). Learn how this is also true for African-American children (reducting the "achievement gap"). Learn how they have reduced behavioral referrals by 39%, they've won awards for Character Education, the principal received the Distinguished Service Award, the teachers' work with technology integration informed the District's "Tech Plan," and learn about the $2 million in grants they won (for afterschool programming and to journey to become one of the 'unexpected' schools who thrives despite being highly-mobile, and high-poverty. There is way more to the story than what you have here. Close Quote

About Student-Teacher Ratio
Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
