Summary

Shoultes Elementary is a public K-5 school serving 348 students in the Marysville School District, which faces broader academic challenges as it ranks in the state's bottom quartile.

Academically, Shoultes ranks in the bottom 15% of Washington elementary schools, with proficiency rates in English and Math significantly below state averages; however, its science scores are a relative strength and its fifth-grade math outperforms the district average. The school serves a high-need population, with nearly 60% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, and it spends more per student than some higher-performing nearby schools like Pinewood Elementary and the Marysville Coop Program.

Interesting comparisons within the same district show that the Marysville Coop Program, located in the same building as Marshall Elementary, achieves much stronger academic results with lower per-student spending, suggesting program design and student demographics influence outcomes. While Shoultes faces significant challenges, its pockets of strength in upper-grade math and science, alongside successful models within its own district, indicate potential pathways for improvement.

Open Quote This is a terrible school.
The principal doesn't seem AT ALL interested in the stresses and concerns we have as parents. She is rude and does not listen to our needs. Her office staff is about the same except one. They easily release your children without checking I.D. And force your children to play at recess even if he or she is not interested and cold out. They have no respect for diversity, and are quick to assume the worst in you as parents when your children have reasonable excuses as to why they cannot attend school. The staff openly gossips about the children and parents'. I have walked in on them doing so. My children are not white and they are treated so. Tired of the rude , unprofessional atmosphere that the children are in. The School is in poor condition along with their educational programs and plans for our children. They say the dont encourage bullying but bully our children for being different skin color and treat them as if they were the problem. Overall a stinky attitude and we are all tired of it. If we were in a better place financially, we would not force our children to continue attending such a place. Close Quote

Open Quote This is not a safe school and it is getting worse! The principal encourages citizens to visit classrooms for parties, etc. without being screened as possible felons, or petifiles. Adults are not screened and are often found on campus without being processed through the office. Part of the problem, I believe, is the layout of the campus and many unlocked doors from the outside, the lack of security and the poor leadership skills of the Principal and the Superintendent. The morale of the staff, at Shoultes and many schools in the district, is very low. I believe this is due to the poor leadership skills of the Superintendent. The entire upper administration of the district are very hostile with a negative attitude. Close Quote
