Summary

Silver Lake Elementary is a public PK-5 school serving 382 students in the Federal Way School District, a district that faces academic challenges across the board.

While the school's overall state ranking is low, it shows important strengths, particularly in math where it outperforms the district average and in its effective support for English Language Learners. Compared to other schools in the area, like Mirror Lake Elementary School or Panther Lake Elementary School, Silver Lake achieves middle-tier academic results. It's notable that the school accomplishes this with per-student spending that is below average for nearby schools, suggesting efficient use of resources.

The school has shown significant recent improvement in its ranking and demonstrates that strong outcomes are possible within the district, as seen at higher-performing Twin Lakes Elementary School. However, performance varies by grade level, with a notable drop in fourth grade proficiency. For parents, Silver Lake represents a school with clear momentum and specific areas of excellence, operating in a supportive role for its high-need student population within a struggling district.

Open Quote 90 of the staff just doesn't care, the older the kids get, the less the staff is engaged. The principal is terrible, does not work with teachers to improve difficult situations and doesn't work with parents. There is little or no communication about what is happening with parents as far as what is going on with the school. The principal is not forthcoming with answers regarding fundraising and there is not evidence of money that has been raised or donated going to school improvement. Parent involvement is minimal, but why should parents want to get involved with the staff doesn't address them or give them updates or communicate with them in anyway? Basically, very few of the staff members care and the majority of the parents don't care either. Close Quote
