Summary

Pillow Elementary is a public elementary school in Austin, Texas, serving 365 students in grades PK-5 as part of the Austin Independent School District (AISD). Despite its relatively low student-teacher ratio and higher-than-average per-student spending, Pillow Elementary consistently ranks in the bottom quartile of Texas elementary schools, with significantly below-average performance on state assessments across all grade levels and subjects.

Pillow Elementary's academic struggles are particularly pronounced in mathematics, where proficiency rates range from just 12.82% to 35.56%, compared to the state average of 44.88% to 46.24%. The school's performance on STAAR Spanish assessments, taken by English Language Learner (ELL) students, is also significantly below district and state averages. Nearby Cook Elementary, Gullett Elementary, and Doss Elementary generally outperform Pillow Elementary on academic measures, though these higher-performing schools also tend to have lower percentages of economically disadvantaged students.

The high percentage of economically disadvantaged students at Pillow Elementary, which reached 78.9% in the 2023-2024 school year, may be a significant factor contributing to the school's low academic performance. Despite the school's relatively high per-student spending and low student-teacher ratio, these additional resources and smaller class sizes alone have not been enough to overcome the challenges faced by the student population. Pillow Elementary's consistently low performance over the past decade suggests that a more comprehensive approach to addressing the needs of its students may be necessary to drive meaningful progress.
