Summary

John F. Horgan School is an elementary school located in West Warwick, Rhode Island, serving students from kindergarten to 4th grade with a total enrollment of 481 students.

Despite the school's focus on smaller class sizes, with a student-teacher ratio ranging from 12.9 to 14.1 over the past three years, John F. Horgan School consistently ranks in the bottom half of Rhode Island elementary schools, with a ranking between 136-155 out of 166-167 schools over the past 10 years. The school's performance on RICAS (Rhode Island Comprehensive Assessment System) tests is significantly below the state and West Warwick district averages, with only 20.6% of all students proficient or better in English Language Arts and 14.4% in Mathematics, compared to 36.7% and 38.4% for the state, respectively.

The school's high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 45.11% to 61.46% over the past three school years, suggests that socioeconomic factors may be playing a significant role in the school's academic performance. While the school's spending per student has increased over the past few years, from $12,912 in 2019-2020 to $16,717 in 2022-2023, the persistent low performance indicates that additional resources alone may not be enough to address the underlying challenges facing the school. Nearby schools in the Scituate and Warwick districts, such as Hope School and Greenwood School, significantly outperform John F. Horgan School on academic measures, suggesting that the school's challenges may be unique to its local context.

Open Quote Parent of K and 2nd grade students. The school environment is very friendly and acceptable. I have not heard of any major problems regarding discipline or bullying. All personnel is very warm and friendly; from the staff to the teachers.

Teachers have managed to get my children into the habit of reading which is good and development of their artistic skills.

nevertheless, I feel the overall work / homework assigned to the kids could be brought up a notch. math and writting skills could be improved with more homework...as well as geography and history. Close Quote
