Open Quote Our son attends West Gresham Elementary.
Our son has been constantly harassed and threatened many times over the last school year. We have complained and even coached him to ignore the name-calling, racism, and harassment. After today's incident, we are filing a police report.
#1
Most recent incident occurred 10/30/19 3:00-3:20pm (Bus drop off home)
We called at 530pm and left a message on the school line.
He had an incident with the Caucasian woman, bus monitor on his ride home from school.
He is a self-manager, which grants him the duty of being a bus monitor.
According to what I was told is as followed:
My son stated that he was doing his normal bus duties to make sure the kindergartens were seated. This lady grabbed his armed and told him to sit down and she was going to put him to the front of the bus. He pulled away and explained that he was making sure the little kids were in their seats.
Upon exiting the bus she made a comment "Black kids these days"

#2
1 week ago he was pushed into the mud by a kid that was bullying him.

#3 - School has a record of this
4 weeks ago he was hit on the head (Kid slammed the door) in his face and he fell to the ground. An incident report was filed, I was contacted by the nurse. However, this child was upset because my son was chosen to be self-manager by the teacher.

#4 - School has a record of this
In the Spring (I believe it was April/May), he threatened to have his throat slit by another child. The school filed a police report but I did not press charges at that time.
#5
Almost daily he was bullied and called racism & homophobic names on and offsite school premises. It occurred so often we honestly stop keeping track because we had no physical proof, as parents we could only provide him emotional support.

We are requesting the policy and process necessary to escalate this matter of safety and concern. We are requesting the school district investigates the West Gresham school of racism and safety for my African-American child, as if they do not want him there then the district needs to transfer him to a school that is more diverse in educating diverse children. About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
