Summary

Poughkeepsie Middle School is a public middle school serving grades 5-8 in the Poughkeepsie City School District, with 872 students. Despite significant per-student spending, the school has consistently ranked in the bottom 10-15% of New York middle schools over the past decade, with a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Poughkeepsie Middle School significantly underperforms the state and district averages on standardized tests, with only 15.92% of 8th graders proficient in ELA and 0.79% proficient in Math in 2024-2025, compared to state averages of 52.38% and 46.74% respectively. The school's subgroup performance also highlights significant achievement gaps, with African American, multi-racial, and English Language Learner students ranking in the bottom 15-20% of New York middle schools for ELA and Math.

While Poughkeepsie Middle School spends significantly more per student ($31,466 in 2023-2024) compared to the state average, this has not translated to improved outcomes. In contrast, nearby middle schools like Orville A. Todd Middle School (Spackenkill UFSD) and Rombout Middle School (Beacon CSD) consistently rank in the top 30-40% of New York middle schools and have much higher proficiency rates. Addressing the root causes of Poughkeepsie Middle School's persistent challenges will be critical to improving outcomes for its diverse student population.

Open Quote My son currently attends Poughkeepsie Middle School. Although communication of events is sometimes lacking, we have been very happy with the school over all during his first year attending. My son takes Cello, and is in honors classes, offered for science, english and social studies. The kids maintaining high honors in 5th grade were given the option of taking a foreign language, as well. They are also preparing these students for a pre-calculus class, to be offered next year. I feel Poughkeepsie Schools have an undeserved poor reputation. Our son has attended Poughkeepsie city schools for 4 years now, and we have been happy with his experience. The school is pro-active with conflict resolution and offers more programs than the suburban district we had moved from. We are looking forward to next year, when our son will be able to start the sports programs,he's signed up for among other sports, Swimming and Crew. Close Quote
