Open Quote I have two kids at Washington - one currently in 1st grade and the other in 3rd.

With the exception of a truly wonderful 2nd grade teacher for my older one, the teaching has been thoroughly average, and the administration seems intent more on making everyone feel good than promoting excellence - from the teachers OR the kids.

The test scores are *terrible* at Washington (worst in the district), and just because they also happen to have by far the highest percentage of kids who speak Spanish at home the attitude seems to be "well, what can you do?".

it is also extremely noticeable that starting in 3rd grade, when the kids who were selected by lottery leave for the STEM school, that the classes left at Washington become overwhelmingly filled with ESL kids. My child didn't get off the waitlist, and is now one of maybe 4 kids in class who are native English speakers.

Overall, it's not a terrible place, but my kids are not getting the opportunities they would have if we lived even 5 miles away...unfortunately, we believed the propaganda that "Huntington has great schools" when we were buying, and now we are locked in for many reasons.

From the data in the test scores and from what I have heard from people in the other 3 primary schools in the district, these issues are most pronounced at Washington. Perhaps it's time to redraw the school districts? Close Quote

About Student-Teacher Ratio
Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
