So I will give this school two stars, because my 6th grade experience was relatively enjoyable, at least academically. Nonetheless, the school is completely and utterly overrated. This is how it works. You get accepted, and you think to yourself, "I'm so proud of myself, I got into one of NYC's top schools." You're so psyched to go there, and you spend your whole summer thinking about how amazing of an experience this is going to be for you. Now, when I was there, 6th grade could go either way, a total mess, or a completely enjoyable experience. Thankfully, I had fantastic teachers for 6th grade, and I was a top student in my class, moreover, my cohort. However, the best of the best: Ms. Anne Marie Todes has retired now, and for the rest of these teachers, they're all average. You see there are three cohorts, or clusters of homerooms, with an average of 3 homerooms in each, no more, maybe less. You get randomly mixed up, not based on school smarts or grades or anything like that. It's all a matter of luck. You might be in Cohort A and have phenomenal teachers, and be in Cohort B and have a horrendous math teacher. Every year, my best subject seemed to change, based on the teacher. You don't necessarily get a lot of homework in Scholars'. However, the never ending projects each marking period that you're assigned to do in each class definitely make up for that time. I know this may sound a bit rude, as I AM one of Scholars' past students, but most kids make it nearly impossible to make strong bonds and develop trust. The thing is, absolutely no one in the school has respect for anyone. Kids have their priorities all screwed up. They're more focused about the drama and the gossip than their grades and homework. As I was one of the top kids in my class, everyday I would be asked for test and quiz answers, and was then accused for cheating once I raised my hand to ask if I may move my seat, as I would never dare rat someone out, yet, my grades are my grades, and I've worked hard studying for them. I won't simply give them away, as once the person gets their paper back and sees THEIR grade, suppose they might get a reality check and realize they need to study harder. Most teachers don't push you to do your best, yet you get reprimanded if you dont do what's expected of you. Yes, everyone SHOULD know what's expected of them, but unfortunately, most students in this school do not. In addition, bullying is a HUGE issue in this school. Nonetheless, there's only one thing I can advise you of, never ever go to the guidance counselors for anything. Absolutely anything. Either work it out on your own or grow up and ignore the issue. The infamous guidance counselors in our school are notorious for making your child's life a living hell. I'm not going to sugarcoat anything here, they accuse innocent victims, and then simply write you up on your permanent record. For absolutely nothing. The amount of times your child will miss class for something of such ridicule is extremely mind boggling. In 6th grade, I was involved in two incidents, one, a bullying issue, the other, innapropriate behavior on a bus, well, not from me, from another child and I was a "witness." The system is absolutely pathetic. I refused to say anything because I knew what would happen to this child if I did, plus, I won't ever allow myself to get involved in any drama, it is not only against my religion, but against the standards I set for myself. For me at least, getting involved in such ridiculous matter such as this is a sin. As the majority of the school is Catholic Irish, those who aren't are bullied for their race and their religion. I can't even begin to explain how many times I've been called something that involved my religion. If you're Jewish, African American, or Hindu, I hope you're not too sensitive. That's all I will say. This school has changed me so much as a person it's insane, and trust me, not in a good way. I may have become a better writer, a stronger and more analytical mathematician and scientist, yet, the damage is done, there's no going back. I used to be an outgoing child with no complexes, now, I'm not only insecure about my appearance and all my actions, but I shut everyone out. I've learned to trust no one, and that until we get to college and possibly high school, all these "friendships" are just not worth it. In a way, I commend this school for making me a stronger individual, yet, some people may not have the strength to put up with what I went through. Everyone's different. Parents, you know your children much better than I do. I just really wish the reputation within the school was as phenomenal as the expected reputation of "The Scholars' Academy." The name of the school should reflect on the student's behavior and the teacher's skill in and of itself, yet, in simplest terms, this school is a chaotic mess. Definitely anything but scholarly.
