Open Quote I must say the principal is very nice and is indeed a genuine person, but the school itself is very disorganized when dismissing kindergarten kids. They need a better system. Currently its very easy for someone to enter the school and grab a child.
Also its a stampede when they open the back doors for parents to enter. very dangerous.
I am actually thinking about keeping my child home until things improve.....
I understand the school is crowded, but safety should be first priority. Stagger the dismissal or clearly separate the students from the parents and only let the child leave after they recognize their parent or guardian that is picking them up........ Close Quote

Open Quote This is a Very good school overall. It is brightly lit, clean and orderly. When class is in session you can walk the halls and literally hear a pin drop.

Academics are near the top for this S.E. Queens district.

They finally are bringing in Gifted & Talented classes (1 per grade) so get your kids tested Mom & Dad!

All classrooms have plenty of good text books and learning materials and also modern networked computers w/laser printer.

Special in-school and afterschool programs are pretty good but very limited (Note: Take the time to find out what is available and who is running what in case you need to get your kid into a program)

The School Library is well stocked and the classrooms all seem to have a good reading selection.

There are 'Smart Boards' in several classrooms in the upper grades. *Google it if you don't know what these are*

Kids (mostly) wear uniforms (Which is a Godsend) but compliance with the mandatory policy drops off as the year goes by. Sadly there are enough parents who just don't get it and are clearly dumping their kids and their parental responsibility on the school.

Parent involvement overall is pretty poor. (Lots of ESL here - the school offers free English classes for parents but far less than 1% takes advantage of this) So despite lots of Parent Letters sent from the school and a shiny new Web Site (www.ps108q.org) most parents choose to remain on the sidelines - Teachers and staff clearly deserve a lot of the credit for the kids grades.

Parent 'Teacher' Association is a money and bake-sale machine and leaves a lot to be desired - think "Gossip Girl" - Teachers mostly stay clear of them. Word to the wise: don't go here for help unless you want everyone to know your business.

The Parent coordinator is a true gem who doesn't take nonsense and like the rest of the staff is generally very helpful.

But in this school the real power lies with the Principal who is clearly a law & order type who runs the whole show (Which is mostly a good thing) but her love for her 1300+ kids is genuine. Close Quote
