As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Choosing a middle school was difficult for me. However after seeing the state wide test scores for 181 and visiting the school I was happy to have my son attend. He is now in 7th grade and I am satisfied with the school. After reading some of the previous years reviews from other parents I'm shocked. My son complained about 1 of his teachers giving too much homework this year and he was all stressed out. While I understand it can be overwhelming for some children I had to have an honest talk with him. I for one am happy that this teacher is pushing him. What students don't understand (and I can completely understand why they don't) is that if you want to excel in life you have to push yourself. High school is not easy, college is not easy, and any career (notice I didn't say job) you have won't be easy. Most times it will be difficult and you will be expected to rise to the occasion and do the best work possible. I try to tell my son that there is a bigger goal in life and when you work hard you get to enjoy many more things. This market is hard and competition is fierce. I can't afford to put my son in a Ivy League school (which they give a ton of work). So I wanted him somewhere that would prepare him for high school and the future. This summer he received work but was still able to go out and have fun. It's been a few years since the last review so maybe the school was giving a ton of summer work at that time but certainly not now. In my opinion they could have given more. Parents should really think about the example they are setting for their children. To round this review up I am happy with the school my only complaint would be there is not enough extra curricular activities. However that is more along the lines of funding, so aside from that thank you to the teachers and staff for all your efforts. Close Quote

Open Quote I am a child that attends I.S 181. I get vary tired and lonely when i go to this school, My friends in other classes that don't get as much work always get to go outside and fun! When i have to stay home and do work until around 8 o'clock when its to late. I think it's very unfair and i don't like this school at ALL !
Now that it is summer time I'm stuck in the house doing work day and night i haven't seen outside in 2 weeks and it makes me sad.I haven't been able to join my friends (who get less work than)at the beach or park.Neither have i gone on a vacation because i have a lot of work to do and i know if i go outside or on vacation i will not finish my work in time and that will bring my average down.I dont want my school to know beacue i think they will get offended or mad ...

Open Quote I think my child is getting to much work for there age the school has good opportunity in life. At this school but i am tired of my child coming home crying because of depression and the rude teachers.when my child first started attending I.S 181 i thought it was a good idea but now my child is in counseling for stress the school put on them ... the school gives a lot of work to CERTAIN students and my child thinks is unfair .When my off spring starts school in September i would like to meet with the principal and staff because i am sick of the pain my child is in. Open Quote I believe that my child is receiving too much summer work.I understand that you want the best for the kids as do I want for my child but at the same time they are being overwhelmed. I would like to spend time with my child during the summer but she cant because she's stuck inside doing all this summer work. I am highly against it. they learn all year and their only time to enjoy freedom is during the summer. I have also been told that other classes aren't getting the same amount of summer work as my child. It is not fair. You are either to limit the work or don't give it at all. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
