As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Principal was aware of the bullying, and the risk that some of the middle school kids possessed. Plenty of dangerous incidents happened in that school and was not reported. Parents were only notified by their children. Close Quote

Open Quote My son is currently in 3rd grade and we have been at PS 180 since PreK. We have had a wonderful experience there, and it truly feels like a community. We walk in the building filled with smiles and greeting everyone like family. My son loves school! He has had the opportunity to participate in the dance and art programs, to have free swim lesson throughout his 2nd grade year, and this year he is looking forward to participating in the Chess in Schools and Midori Music programs. We love PS 180! Close Quote

Open Quote We love Hugo Newman! It is a warm, supportive community with experienced teachers, engaged parents and some of the nicest kids you'll ever meet.

When we drop our daughter off at PK, her classmates are eager to greet her baby brother with a gentle pat on the head. When she returns to school after a doctor's visit, her classmates want to know if she is okay. At after school, several of the older kids have "adopted" her as an honorary little sister. The middle school students come to read books to the PK students. This group of children is just amazing in terms of their empathy, friendship and care for one another.

PK is play based with lots of time on the playground, art projects, building blocks, and reading stories on the rug. They also have special activities - they grow veggies in the hydroponics lab, act out stories in theater arts, and dance salsa and flamenco with Ballet Hispanico.

The after school program is a lifesaver for working parents. The kids have a great time playing games, making art, going outside, and singing songs. There is an optional Mandarin class taught by a compassionate and beloved native speaker.

We plan to stay through 8 grade so that we can participate in the English-Spanish dual language program, learn a musical instrument in elementary school, try out for debate team and student counsel in middle school, and enjoy the friendships and community ties at our neighborhood school. Open Quote This is a wonderful school. My daughter is in Pre-K and her teachers Ms. Darby and Ms. Lewis are wise and nurturing. The hallways have lovely, colorful murals, and the environment and location are excellent. The after school program, Roads to Success, is run by a gentleman named Chad and his dynamic staff who have been phenomenal. Tons of rotating activities for the children after school, including drama, sports, outdoor play. On Thursday afternoons, our daughter takes a Mandarin class at the school, and it is easily her favorite weekly activity. Hugo Newman also features a library with a full-time librarian, a hydroponics lab (growing lettuce, radishes, basil, arugula!), computer room, and other valuable resources. Overall, we love the sense of community here and intend to keep our children at Hugo Newman until high school. Highly recommend! Close Quote

Open Quote The community of PS 180 is warm, friendly and collaborative. The loving dedicated teachers and families and leaders create an atmosphere of respect that you can feel when you walk in the door of the school.

It's true that test scores are low compared to other D3 schools. However learning is demonstrated through more than test scores! Students play instruments, play chess, experiment in science and technology, perform on stage, take part in yearly science fair and spelling bee, and students' impressive math and writing lines the halls of the school.

The excellent classroom student:teacher ratio allows for more differentiation in lessons, and communication between teachers and families is consistent and fair. Students also benefit from partnerships with outside organizations which allow students to experience hands-on learning with ocean animals, meaningful class trips, and opportunities to explore their own interests.

Families have several opportunities to get involved at the school through the Parent Association, the Green Team, or at any of the family events that take place throughout the year including Winter Wonderland, Science FEST and the Multicultural Fair. There is also a FREE exercise class for parents that meets three days a week in the morning at the school - what a healthy way to meet members of the school community!

I currently have three children attending the school and my family has been involved with the school for five years. This school is a gem in the neighborhood. Close Quote

Open Quote I can't say enough about how much this community school stands at a beacon of hope for parents looking for alternative approaches to the growing tide of less than optimal charter schools in the Harlem area. The elementary school has an incredible and committed parent body and smart, socially conscious, and respectful children. The low review of this school actually surprises me as I have been here for 4 years and will rate it 5 stars every year! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
