Summary

Newell Elementary is a public elementary school in Charlotte, North Carolina, serving 574 students in grades K-5. The school is part of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools district, which is ranked 119 out of 242 districts in the state.

Newell Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom 10% of North Carolina elementary schools, with a 0 or 1 out of 5 star rating from SchoolDigger. The school significantly underperforms the district and state in standardized test scores across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in the 2024-2025 school year, only 36.8% of 3rd graders at Newell Elementary were proficient or better in mathematics, compared to 66.7% for the district and 64.1% for the state. The school's reading proficiency rates are particularly low, with only 22.2% of 3rd graders, 34.4% of 4th graders, and 25.5% of 5th graders meeting or exceeding proficiency.

While Newell Elementary faces significant challenges due to its high-poverty student population, the school's relatively small class sizes and per-student spending levels that are on par with the district suggest potential for improvement with the right interventions and strategies. Nearby schools like Devonshire Elementary and University Meadows Elementary also serve high-poverty student populations but generally perform better than Newell Elementary, while the Vaughan Academy of Technology, a public magnet school, demonstrates that high-poverty schools can achieve strong academic outcomes with the right resources and approach.

Open Quote The teachers at this school are exceptional, only limited by the disorganized, willfully noncommunicative so called administrators. This school does not facilitate the use of weekly spelling/vocabulary exams or the use of the accelerated reader program, both of which I find critical to the success of young children (with regards to standardized testing). The administration has multiple issues, beginning with miscommunication, hostility towards parent(s) whom express concern/dissent with their policies and a principal who finds it inconvenient to even speak with students's parents by phone when requested. This school needs an administrative overhaul, so that those who "run" the school are just as efficient as the teachers whom the school employs. Close Quote
