Summary

West Henderson High is a public high school serving 1,066 students in grades 9-12 in Hendersonville, North Carolina, which is part of the Henderson County Schools district. The school has consistently performed well academically, ranking in the top 30% of North Carolina high schools and maintaining strong graduation rates that meet or exceed the state average.

Compared to other high schools in the district, West Henderson High generally outperforms its peers, such as East Henderson High and North Henderson High, on academic measures like End-of-Course (EOC) proficiency rates and graduation rates. However, the school has seen a significant increase in the percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, suggesting growing economic challenges for the student population.

While West Henderson High outperforms its district peers, it lags behind the exceptional performance of the Henderson County Early College, which consistently ranks in the top 1% of North Carolina high schools. This suggests that the Early College model may be a successful approach for improving academic outcomes in the region.

Open Quote I was starting this school in 9th grade of 2009. I was in special ed. unfortunately. . it was a very bad class at this school... The teachers in special ed were so rude and hateful to the special ed students.. they would yell and force them to behave proper.. whenever i got sick the main teacher would harass me and my mom and even threaten us. I was very sick alot and had seen the doctor for meds and a school note. one day, the main teacher called my artwork trash and cause me to give up on my dream job as a anime artist and they even talked about me and my mom behind our backs. mrs edwards is the rudest teacher i ever had during my schooling at whhs ! oh here's some more things about the special ed there.. They made us go clean the football field, clean the cafeteria, go to a farm to clean the animals, go to the gardening center even during winter. if you plan on sending your child to this program at this school... please don't do it......... Open Quote You have some good teachers and then you have the ones you wonder why they chose to teach. They come to school looking like they don't care, they treat your kids like they don't care and the work sheets they send home for homework or for parent signatures are sloppy and unprofessional. This school looks like they have a dollar to split amongst 60 teachers for supplies and personal attire. The guidance counselors for 9th and 10th grade is great to the students personally but not much help educationally. If you have an issue with any of the teaching staff, first the principle delegates the email to the counselor, then you get a teacher conference where they just put the problem back on the child. There is no taking ownership of anything. In the 2 years my child has been there I find the kids have to conform to teaching styles but the teachers do not conform to the learning styles. I was told by the same guidance counselor when my son went there and was failing Earth Science (along with 75% of the class) that the teacher was overdue for retirement. He also stated West has the lowest drop out rate, in the same breath he suggested I home school my son. That's why the rate is low. They shuffle kids out to home school and it no longer affects their drop out rate. If I had the money I'd send my kid to private school. I wish they had charter school up here like Florida. Give the kids some options. We have Balfour.....enough said. Close Quote
