Open Quote The school district is the very worst of the four districts in which I have worked over the past 15 years. Many of the teachers at the high school rely on handouts and do not actually try to teach. Most of the students are ill-prepared for high school courses without sufficient reading/comprehension/problem-solving skills. And building-level administrators are rarely seen on-campus, at least at the high school in Marks. They are missing in action, presumably at a workshop/training/conference with select cronies. This is the only school where the principal routinely shows up after everyone else has arrived. Moreover, nobody in the community seems to think that the situation is bad so nothing is being done to change it. When the principal told me that we (meaning the teachers already in place) can say that the students around here behave as if they are in a zoo but nobody else (an outsider/recently hired teacher) could say that, I knew she was making it plain that I did not fit in, would not fit in, and that she would not be renewing my contract. Unfortunately for the students, a real teacher who teaches each day will be lost in the district. So sad! Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
