As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I have a first grader and have been very happy with Tanglen as our choice for him. The principal, Dr. Hebeisen who has been in place since 2013 is a wonderful leader who creates an environment of respect and enthusiasm for learning. The teachers are really strong and happy under his leadership. The school is diverse and serves families from a wide range of income and works very hard to meet all kids needs. My son is able to participate in challenge math and reading, weekly in-school Spanish, STEM extracuriculars, chess class etc. and feels welcomed and excited to learn. I like that he is learning to connect with people of all backgrounds and socio-economic situations and become a well-rounded kid Close Quote

Open Quote This school has done a 180 in the past year due to a new principal and a new approach to behavior rewards. The whole attitude of the school has greatly improved. The teachers and staff seem much happier. The students seem more excited about the school and have Tanglen Pride! There has been a wonderful and much needed turn around at this school! I foresee that continuing with the new principal and changes from this past year! Close Quote

Open Quote I have 1st grader here @ Tanglen and soon to be kindergartner next year. This school has solved a lot of the issues that have been a problems in the past.
*There is now a Behavior Plan that every student is held accountable for their actions. Whether it be in the lunchroom, playground or even the hallway.
*The principal is weekly giving update on things we need to know about the school and is always accessible to chat with.

I haven't been more happy to see my child grow, learn and be a great role model. The diversity in the school has help my child be a well rounded kid and I couldn't ask for anything more. I would highly recommend sending your child here. Close Quote

Open Quote I have a 3rd grader and 1st grader here @ Tanglen. My 3rd grader has attended Tanglen since 1st grade. This school has several issues, here are a few.
*Bad behavior with no consequences.
*Lack of communication!!!
*Class sizes are huge, almost 30 kids per class.
*No LRTs (Learning Resource Teachers).
*No authority/leadership.
*Depressing environment, building and playground are outdated.
*Bullying rules @ this school, kids run the show.
*Teacher morale is low, they are overworked and not supported by admins.
*Overall culture of disrespect between staff, students, parent's.
*Not enough options for gifted and talented students.
*Recess is like a war zone/free for all/etc.
*No cultural/holiday/birthday celebrations allowed :(
Don't send your child here, their education will suffer. This has got to be one of the worst schools in the Hopkins School District. Close Quote

Open Quote I don't appreciate that Hopkins schools do not offer foreign language until middle school, and no band/orchestra until middle school, either - a serious drawback for us. Some teachers are really good, but the discipline philosophy is inferior to that in some of the other schools we explored. We are transferring/open enroling our daughter to another school in another district next year. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
