Wood Creek Elementary School

Summary:

Wood Creek Elementary School is a public elementary school in Farmington Hills, Michigan, serving students from kindergarten to 5th grade as part of the Farmington Public School District. The school faces several challenges, including a high percentage of African American students, lower academic performance compared to nearby schools, and high rates of chronic absenteeism.

Academically, Wood Creek Elementary School's performance, as measured by M-Step test scores, is generally lower than the district and state averages across various grade levels and subjects. For example, in 2023-2024, the school's 3rd-grade English Language Arts proficiency rate was 38.7%, compared to the district's 51.6% and the state's 39.6%. When compared to other elementary schools in the district, Wood Creek Elementary School ranks 840 out of 1,486 Michigan elementary schools, while nearby schools like Forest Elementary (ranked 323) and Farmington STEAM Academy (ranked 149) perform significantly better.

Another area of concern is the high rates of chronic absenteeism at Wood Creek Elementary School, ranging from 6.2% in 2020-2021 to 34.3% in 2021-2022, which is significantly higher than the surrounding schools. The school also has a relatively high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 40.58% to 49.01% over the past few years, indicating a higher proportion of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds. Addressing these issues through targeted interventions and resource allocation could be crucial for improving the school's overall performance and providing a high-quality education for its students.

As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote I do not understand how you can only rate a school only on test scores. This school has amazing staff and great faculty. It is true that Woodcreek get A bad report card but you have to see the students and how they love to learn. We get alot of students who come from other failing schools and the faculty does an amazing job to get them caught up and to learn. The test scores are not proof of a great school. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
