About the Smarter Balanced Assessments: The Maine Educational Assessment (MEA) includes required assessments in Mathematics, English Language Arts/Literacy, Science and English Language Proficiency. In the spring of 2015, Maine used the MEA Mathematics and ELA/Literacy developed by the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) as its statewide assessment. Legislation enacted in June 2015 discontinued Maine’s membership in the SBAC. As a result, the Department worked through a competitive process of determining a subsequent method of assessment including the creation of a task force to inform requirements and gather feedback. A Request for Proposal was issued in September, 2015, and the contract to implement the spring 2016 assessment for Mathematics and English Language Arts/Literacy for grades 3-8 and 3rd year high school has been awarded to Measured Progress, Inc.Maine DOE

About Student-Teacher Ratio
Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
