Summary

St. John Elementary School is a public elementary school serving 688 students in grades PK-5 in Lake Charles, Louisiana, which is part of the Calcasieu Parish school district. This school consistently outperforms the district and state averages in both Math and English Language Arts proficiency, with 72% of students proficient or better in Math and 81% in ELA, compared to 60% and 70% statewide, respectively.

St. John Elementary particularly excels for its Hispanic and Special Education student populations, ranking 24th and 117th out of all Louisiana elementary schools in those subgroups, respectively. While the school has seen a rise in chronic absenteeism, from 18.5% to 24.6%, this is still lower than the 24.6% average across nearby schools. The school also serves a relatively high percentage of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 35.57% to 63.76% over the past 3 years.

Compared to nearby schools, St. John Elementary outperforms most in test scores, student group performance, and chronic absenteeism, with the exception of the highly-ranked T.S. Cooley Elementary Magnet School, which achieves 100% proficiency in Math and ELA. While St. John Elementary has maintained strong academic performance over the past decade, the school may want to investigate any equity gaps for certain student subgroups to ensure all students have the opportunity to succeed.
