Summary

Bright Elementary School is a public elementary school serving grades PK-8 in Chicago, Illinois, with an enrollment of 212 students. The school is part of the Chicago Public Schools District 299, which is ranked 698 out of 811 districts in Illinois and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Bright Elementary School consistently ranks in the bottom 10% of Illinois elementary schools, with significantly below-average performance on standardized tests across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in the 2024-2025 school year, only 22.2% of Bright Elementary students were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 42.8% in the district and 53.1% statewide. In mathematics, the proficiency rate was just 6.7%, compared to 27.3% in the district and 38.5% statewide. The school also struggles with high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 25.4% to 40.8% in recent years, which is much higher than the district and state averages.

Interestingly, the nearby schools, such as Washington G Elementary School, Burnham Elementary Inclusive Academy, and Earhart Elementary Opt for Knowl School, generally outperform Bright Elementary School on academic measures, despite serving similar student populations. This suggests that factors beyond just student demographics, such as school leadership, instructional practices, and resource allocation, may be contributing to the performance gap. Addressing these issues will likely require a multifaceted approach that goes beyond just increasing funding.

Open Quote Ever since the current principal began her tenure at Bright test scores have plummeted, enrollment has dropped, and teaching positions have been cut. The principal is very disrespectful and "combative" (her favorite word). She screams at the students and the teachers. I have heard her scream at a teacher in front of other parents and children. Is there any wonder why so many teachers quit in the middle of the year every school year? Our school has a huge problem with bullying unfortunately the biggest bully is the principal and all of our children are suffering because of it. Close Quote
