Oakwood school and the rest of SD 113A is woefully underfunded. The average class size of the first grade is 28.5 for the 2010-2011 school year. The class sizes get progressively larger in the higher grades. This average class is larger than all but one of the 67 comparably-sized school districts in the three-county area and the Chicago public schools too. 20% of the teachers were laid off at the end of the 2009-2010 school year due to an extreme budget deficit. The people of Lemont refuse to support the schools and are willing to risk a state takeover rather than pay $80 more in property taxes. The teachers are very good, but must be stretched to the limit. The teachers are the 2nd lowest paid when compared to the other 67 schools too. Close Quote
