Summary

Lakeview Elementary is a public elementary school in Centerville, Iowa, serving 541 students in grades K-5. The school is part of the Centerville Community School District, which is ranked 274 out of 313 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Lakeview Elementary faces several challenges, including high chronic absenteeism rates ranging from 19.4% to 36.4% over the past few years, which is significantly higher than the state average. The school's test scores in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science are generally below the state averages, with the school's performance in Mathematics being particularly concerning. Additionally, Lakeview Elementary has a high percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 49.72% to 58.43% over the past few years, suggesting a relatively high proportion of students from low-income families.

While Lakeview Elementary's spending per student is higher than the state average, and the school has a relatively low student-teacher ratio, these factors alone do not appear to be driving improved academic performance. The school's performance is generally lower than the nearby Moravia Elementary School, which has higher test scores and a lower percentage of free and reduced-price lunch recipients. However, Lakeview Elementary is performing better than some of the more rural and lower-performing schools in the region, such as Seymour Elementary School and Moulton Elementary School.

Open Quote As an educator myself, I have a great deal of respect for both the profession and those who choose to undertake it. However, commenting strictly as a parent of several children at Lakeview, I feel there are some issues that are not being addressed. There is a lack of effective leadership, and it shows in everything from the school discipline program to communication with parents. Standards are rarely ever spelled out effectively to students or parents. When they are, they are so broad as to be both confusing and nearly useless.

Communication is poor. When I wished to get an answer to a question about standards I left THREE polite phone messages (over a 7 business day time period) and none were ever returned by the Principal. I had to physically go to the school to finally address the issue. It was made clear by all the vague answers that, in fact, there were no standards.

If you have talented and gifted identified students, this may not be the best place for your children. The talented and gifted program at Lakeview is really a glorified homework club for math achievement. Nothing outside of math giftedness is even recognized, or addressed. This needs to be changed.

Most of the staff, with a few notable exceptions who seem burned out and bitter, are very caring individuals and really do work hard to see their students succeed. Close Quote
