Open Quote My older two graduated from Barbers Point Elementary School and my youngest just enrolled in preschool. After 10+ experience as a parent at Barbers Point, I could confidently say that this school is an amazing school with committed, caring teachers and staff and provides a nurturing environment. The school creates a warm, welcoming feeling and could feel the true aloha. All of the teachers are so positive and it is completely apparent how much they care deeply for each student’s welfare and strive to make each student special. The staff are very helpful and kind and they too care deeply about the students. The teachers and staff at Barbers Point Elementary School go beyond their call of duty. The principal is so involved and interact with every student as well as the parents as much as she can. All the students are happy, polite and noticeably respectful of each other as from Preschool to 5th grade, they learn good characteristics monthly. Also, this school has beyond excellent atmosphere for special need children just like my own. They provide one to one assistance, educate them according to their pace and ability, and truly give them the love. As for the unfortunate kids, the school will provide all the needs so that they too could have the same education, go on field trips, and events.
Barbers Point also provides many after school programs such as Junior Police Officer, STEM, Robotics, and many more. I believe this school is one of the few elementary school that provides hula classes, Hawaiian classes and celebrate May Day. Barbers Point Elementary teaches and treasures the importance of the tradition and culture where the children live.
All my children loves going to school. Any school could give a good education with skilled teachers. However, teachers can not make a child love school. Barbers Point Elementary provides that. And that is a gift itself.
I had a little setback with my last child enrolling in Barbers Point Elementary School. But I can not think of any other school, even private school, that I would have my daughter go to. I did everything I can so that she could go and with the help from teachers and staff, she is happily going to school daily now. Her smile will explain it all how happy she is at BPES.
Barber's Point Elementary School is a school with high academics and full of aloha. I can't recommend it highly enough. Close Quote

Open Quote I have found Barbers Point Elementary has very caring, nurturing teachers, however, disruptions by some students in the classroom does make it very difficult for the teachers and interrupts the learning of other students. Some parents need to become more involved in dealing with their child's inappropriate behavior and more supportive of teachers. The teachers do not make things up just for the sake of saying them! On the other hand, I have also encountered parents that could not do enough to help and support the school. They donate their time, donate materials and their support in positive ways.. thank goodness for them! Close Quote

Open Quote Completely agree with the last review, I grew up in the public school system on the mainland so I am a believer that students are just as well served in public school as a private school. Now, after just 7 weeks of school, I am removing my 5 year old from the school because of safety concerns, inappropriate comments by the staff to my child and myself, reports my child is now "angry and aggressive" which are 2 words never never never ever used to describe her by us or previous teachers, a lack of interest from the principle and her refusal to switch teachers, instead offering to submit paperwork to try switching to another public elementary school in the district. Open Quote I have two children in this school, one of which is in their Special Ed program. This school is far more interested in preserving the bottom line (money from DOE) so they fight parents for getting services. They told us that our son who has mild CP (cerebral palsy) will "outgrow" his tippy-toe walking if we just keep telling him to stop walking that way. Nevermind that we've been to a pediatric neurologist and done a plethora of tests... those silly doctors don't know what they're talking about.

The administration uses fake sincerity, and it shows. The principal will give you the creeps. The teachers are a mixed bag. There's a problem with kids fighting with each other.. even in kindergarten. I attended a Read Aloud Program the school was sponsoring and I hear the kids swearing at each other and calling each other names that you would expect to hear from a group of drunken sailors.

The school constantly wants your money through fund raisers. I've been in this state since the 80's and gone through the school system here, and I can tell you first hand this school really is not a good place to send your kid. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
