Open Quote If you are ACTUALLY looking for a performing arts school, DO NOT SEND YOUR CHILD TO DESA. DESA is a mediocre school, with a few arts-based electives. One or two half-put together performances, does not make it a performing arts school.

Additionally, the principal is really enthusiastic and seems to love her job - unfortunately, too much.

She tries to do EVERYTHING herself. A principal’s job is to hire competent people to delegate tasks to…Not try to do everything themselves. A school cannot be run by one person. It’s impossible to be everywhere, all the time, trying to do everything. Inevitably, lots and lots of things fell through the cracks - including the student’s education and PA part of the school.

I'm giving them two stars for effort, but I was sorely disappointed with our experience there. Close Quote

Open Quote This is one of the worst, unorganized schools EVER!.. They use the fact that they are a magnet school to cover up for their multiple infractions. The 6th grade team with an exception of Mrs. Kabwatha all need to be fired and replaced. There is a teacher there that insist on Facebook as a form of communication in regards to grades and a student's progress. Upon withdrawing my child from the school, we found that her documents had been falsified stating that she was retained in a grade; an act which never happened. The principals do not listen to parents and try to skate by and not correct wrong doings.. PARENTS BEWARE!!!! Close Quote

Open Quote This is a great school. This is my daughter's second year and she loves it. Administration, teachers and staff are very caring towards the students. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
