Summary

Tuttle Elementary School is a public elementary school serving 690 students in grades PK-5 in Sarasota, Florida, which is part of the Sarasota School District. While the district is ranked 11th out of 67 in the state and has a 4-star rating, Tuttle Elementary consistently underperforms compared to district and state averages on standardized tests, with only 46-52% of students proficient in ELA and Math in 2024-2025, compared to 62-73% for the district.

Tuttle Elementary also faces significant challenges, including very high chronic absenteeism rates ranging from 14-31% over the past few years, significantly higher than district and state averages. Additionally, a very high percentage (83-87%) of Tuttle students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high-poverty student population. Despite these challenges, Tuttle spends significantly more per student ($13,120 - $16,533) compared to the district average, and has a relatively low student-teacher ratio of 12.5-13.8.

Interestingly, nearby schools like Bay Haven School Of Basics Plus and Southside Elementary School significantly outperform Tuttle on academic measures, despite serving similar high-poverty student populations. This suggests that Tuttle may be underperforming relative to its peers, and that the school's resources and low student-teacher ratio are not translating into improved academic outcomes. Addressing the root causes of Tuttle's chronic absenteeism and improving instructional practices should be a priority for the school and district.

Open Quote I am very unimpressed with Tuttle. They do not care about students, just how much funding they can get. They do not actually take the time to teach them anything, they just rely on a program IREADY to teach the children. They seem to want students to fail so they can get more state funding. Open Quote I requested a change of classroom for my daughter, who is in first grade, as I picked her up the first two days of school crying. She normally loves school! Turns out her teacher has a reputation for being rude and mean to the children. A friend of mine has witnessed this teacher putting her hands on a student and yelling in their face- enough reason for me to request a new classroom! The principal did not seem to care about my child's feelings and attributed the tears to getting used to a new school. I think I know her better than that! So he refused to move her, and I told him through tears that I was very disappointed and said I was taking her home with me. I'll figure something else out, I guess- I said. His response? A smug "OK. THANKS FOR COMING IN."

UNBELIEVABLE. How can the principal of an ELEMENTARY school care SO LITTLE about a child's feelings? His careless and ignorant behavior is causing us totally unnessesary stresses. A huge disappointment.

I will be contacting the school board. Avoid Tuttle Elementary if you can. They do not have the children's best interests in mind. Close Quote
