Open Quote My son transferred to Newsome from a private school. We were nervous about our decision at first as we had never used a public school before, but now have no regrets. He loves school, is on the honor roll & has honor/AP classes, and is doing very well. He has a lot of great teachers and enjoys his classes. We would definitely recommend Newsome HS! The only drawback would be the difficulty level of getting in touch with someone in the guidance dept., which seems very overwhelmed with a large student- management workload. Close Quote

Open Quote We moved here largely based on the schools here. Newsome High School is totally different that what is read on the internet. I would not recommend this school. The academic program is not challenging enough and my two children thought it was easier than the school from which they were previously enrolled.

The guidance staff is very uncooperative as well as the registar and counselors. It took me two weeks to originally register my kids from school. When my son missed the first two days of school this year because he was hospitalized, they automatically withdrew him. He has now missed the first six weeks of school partly because of their incompetence. I have been trying to get him in a homebound program which usually takes 2-3 weeks. It has been two weeks and they have been sitting on the paperwork. They do not know the proper procedures for this program although they are supposed to be "professionals". The secretary in the guidance office needs to go to ediquette school and learn some manners. He is very unprofessional as well.

Newsome also has a major drug problem as well as the adjacent neighborhood. This is the reason my son is not in school. Given his mental state, it would be determental for him to return. Even though they have a sheriff's deputy on school grounds at all times, it doesn't stop the flow of drugs in the school.

My son was an honor student last year although he was not in any honors classes. They would not put him in any because of the class size amendment Florida has so he was bored. This year he had three honor classes but hasn't been able to catch up on his studies because of their incompetence.

There are several other high schools in this area as well as private schools. I would look at those schools before enrolling your kids at Newsome. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
