Summary

Lakeshore Alternative Elementary is a K-5 public school serving 416 students in the San Francisco Unified district, currently ranked in the 47th percentile among California elementary schools with a 2-star rating.

The school faces significant academic challenges, with proficiency rates in English (38.5%) and Math (32.09%) well below the district average and far behind nearby schools like Sunset Elementary and Ulloa Elementary. A major concern is chronic absenteeism, at 26.1%, which is dramatically higher than the 3.9% rate at Ulloa. Despite these challenges, the school spends more per student ($23,360) than most comparable schools and has a lower student-teacher ratio of 19:1. Performance varies greatly between grades, with 5th grade showing relative strength in science, while 4th grade math proficiency is notably low at 21.88%.

There are extreme disparities in outcomes for different student groups within the school, with some performing exceptionally well while others struggle significantly. The school's statewide ranking has declined from the 67th to the 47th percentile over the past decade, even as nearby schools have maintained or improved. While 65.62% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, similar to Sheridan Elementary, Lakeshore's academic results are mixed in comparison, highlighting that demographics alone do not determine outcomes.

Open Quote My grandson will be starting first grade here this year and he really loves this school..I taught for forty years in the school district. I am in and out of many schools now because I sub. This school is unbelievable. It is calm, the atmosphere is fantastic, and everyone that works here seems genuinely happy and focused. When you walk into the classrooms, you see students who are engaged and often involved in hands-on activities. The principal is as good as it gets, and he is truly supportive of his staff, which explains why the teachers are happy. I volunteer here which,by the way,is really encouraged, so I see what is happening first hand. This is also one of the most diverse schools that I have ever been in and it really benefits the students. Who you do your learning with is more important than what you learn. When you are learning the way these students are, and it is occurring in the midst of this diverse atmosphere, you have entered a realm which most schools are trying to create, but unfortunately fall far short.
