Summary

Hiram W. Johnson High is a large public high school serving about 1,700 students in grades 9-12 within the Sacramento City Unified district, operating in a high-need community where a majority of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

Academically, the school faces significant challenges, ranking in the bottom third of California high schools with proficiency rates in core subjects like math and English far below nearby schools such as West Campus. A major concern is chronic absenteeism, with over 43% of students missing too much school—a rate much higher than the district and state averages and even higher than some neighboring comprehensive high schools like C. K. McClatchy High. Despite receiving more funding per student than several higher-performing schools in the area, outcomes have historically lagged, though recent data shows slight improvements in graduation rates and test scores.

Notably, the school has demonstrated a consistent strength in supporting its English Language Learner students, ranking much higher for this subgroup than for the school overall. The stark contrast with a top-tier school like West Campus, located just over a mile away, highlights deep disparities within the same district. While Johnson shows it can succeed with specific programs, it continues to work on improving attendance and academic achievement for all students to match the performance seen at other schools in the region.

What people are saying
by a teacher

Open Quote Highly disorganized administration and campus. People in the front office don't answer concerns or know where anything is. No one answers the phone. After a teacher quit, they hired me to teach and I show up there's no key to my room, the phone doesn't work and they were confused about why I was there. Administration avoids support of teachers' and parents. If they treat a teacher this way, imagine how they are with parents. Close Quote
