Summary

Orinda Intermediate is a top-performing middle school serving 822 students in grades 6-8 within the highly-ranked Orinda Union school district, consistently placing in the 99th percentile among all California middle schools for over a decade.

The school excels academically, with nearly 88% of students proficient in English and 80% in math, far exceeding state averages, and it maintains exceptionally low chronic absenteeism at just 7.2%. What truly sets Orinda Intermediate apart is its outstanding support for all students; it has ranked in the 100th percentile statewide for specific student subgroups, including Hispanic students and those in special education, demonstrating effective support systems. While the school serves a community with very few economically disadvantaged students, it achieves these stellar results with moderate per-student spending, showing strong efficiency compared to some neighboring districts that spend significantly more for lower outcomes.

When compared to nearby schools, a clear geographic pattern emerges: schools in districts like Piedmont City Unified (Piedmont Middle) and Moraga Elementary (Joaquin Moraga Intermediate) show similarly elite performance, while schools just a few miles away in the Oakland Unified district, such as Edna Brewer Middle or Frick United Academy of Language Middle, face profound challenges despite higher funding, highlighting significant educational disparities within a short distance.

Open Quote I went here for 7th grade and loved it. (This was when it was a Jr. High of grades 7 and 8 only). Fantastic school, beautiful facilities and excellent, caring, creative and seriously smart teachers. Unfortunately, I had to move from Orinda for 8th grade and High School to a less illustrious CA School District, and I missed out on a first-rate education. Thanks OIS! Close Quote
