As you review the school rankings data, please be aware that some of the information from certain demographics is missing. The reason for this omission is that the data has been redacted from the source data itself due to low population samples in these specific demographic groups.

Redacting data from low population samples is a necessary step to ensure the reliability and accuracy of the results, as small sample sizes may not be representative of the broader population. Additionally, this measure helps protect the privacy of individuals belonging to these demographic groups.

Open Quote Carthay Center Elementary School is a wonderful school beyond what the test scores show. There are many low income students and English language learners, who tend to score lower on standardized tests, but our daughters are receiving a wonderful education and score regularly over the 90th percentile, so the teaching at the school is great. We are all very excited that beginning in Fall 2014 the school becomes a Magnet school focusing on Environmental Studies. The school has an amazing garden, and students have the opportunity to learn hands-on about biology, ecology, etc. with the Garden Science program, funded by the PTA and delivered by STAR Education. The PTA also sponsors weekly Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) classes for students identified as gifted or talented, a Writer's Workshop program, a California Dance Institute program, and so much more. There is a free after school program available, also by STAR Education, which provides PE, math and literacy learning opportunities, and extra-curriculars such as art, wood-working, gymnastics, etc. Our daughters love the school, they love going to school, they are thriving. It is a great school. Close Quote

Open Quote My son has been attending Carthay since Pre-K. In September He will be entering the 5th grade. His teachers have been phenomenal and he has enjoyed them and the school immensely. If more parents became involved with the school and had more dialogue with their children's teachers this school could become truly outstanding. Close Quote

About Students eligible for discounted/free lunch:

The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) provides low-cost or free meals to students in U.S. public and nonprofit private schools based on household income. Those with incomes below 130% of the poverty line receive free lunch, while those between 130% and 185% qualify for reduced-price lunch. The percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch serves as a marker for poverty, as it reflects the socioeconomic status of families in a given school or district. A higher FRPL rate typically indicates a higher concentration of low-income families, suggesting that the school or district may face additional challenges in providing adequate resources and support for student success.

About Student-Teacher Ratio

Student/teacher ratio is calculated by dividing the total number of students by the total number of full-time equivalent teachers. Please note that a smaller student/teacher ratio does not necessarily translate to smaller class size. In some instances, schools hire teachers part time, and some teachers are hired for specialized instruction with very small class sizes. These and other factors contribute to the student/teacher ratio. Note: For private schools, Student/teacher ratio may not include Pre-Kindergarten.
