Summary

Bridge Street Elementary is a small, K-5 public school serving 180 students in the Los Angeles Unified district, located in an area with very high economic need where nearly all students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

Academically, the school faces significant challenges, with proficiency in English and math well below both district and state averages; however, it has a notable strength in science, where its performance exceeds the Los Angeles Unified average and surpasses several higher-ranked nearby schools like Second Street Elementary and Griffin Avenue Elementary. The school also struggles with chronic student absenteeism, though this rate has improved from a high of 50% to about 29%, which is still higher than most neighboring schools such as Sheridan Street Elementary and Breed Street Elementary.

A striking finding is that Bridge Street spends more per student—over $44,000—than any other school in the comparison, including charter schools like PUC Milagro Charter, yet its academic outcomes remain in the lower third of state schools. This combination of high funding, a favorable student-teacher ratio, and stronger science results suggests there are specific areas of potential that the school could build upon to improve overall performance for its students.

Open Quote Since my son has been attending this school there has not been a school wide parent meeting. I never met the principle until my son was accused of wrong doing. No wonder parents are not involved because the staff is not involved. I am glad my son will no longer attend this school. Close Quote
