Summary

Monta Vista High is a large, top-performing public high school serving about 1,630 students in grades 9-12 within the highly-regarded Fremont Union High district in Cupertino, consistently ranking among the top 2% of all California high schools.

The school's strengths are clear: exceptional graduation rates (97.5%), remarkably low chronic absenteeism (7.1%), and strong, consistent test scores across all subjects. It also shows impressive effectiveness in supporting specific student subgroups, with its special education program recently ranked #7 in the state. However, it's important for parents to know that Monta Vista exists in an extraordinary cluster of elite schools; within just a few miles, you'll find other top-100 schools like Lynbrook High (#19), Cupertino High (#49), Saratoga High (#54), and Mountain View High (#70). Notably, Lynbrook High consistently outperforms Monta Vista across all academic metrics despite nearly identical resources and demographics.

While Monta Vista delivers outstanding results, recent data shows some trends to watch, including a slight decline in its statewide ranking over the past few years and dips in test scores and subgroup performance for some populations. The school's performance is part of a broader pattern within its own district, where schools like Homestead High and Fremont High show varied outcomes despite similar per-student funding, highlighting that factors beyond budget influence performance.

Open Quote Cupertino is an excellent place to bring up children and I have been 100 impressed with the education that these kids have received from Monta Vista High. They are very well educated, the teachers care about these young adults, and community really cares about them too. I have worked with the youth from many different communities for quite some time now and I can really see the difference with the children from Cupertino. Close Quote
