Summary

Cupertino Middle is a highly-rated public school serving about 1,067 students in grades 6-8 within the exceptional Cupertino Union School District in Sunnyvale, CA.

Academically, the school is outstanding, with over 77% of students proficient in math and 80% in English, far surpassing California state averages. It consistently earns 5-star ratings and ranks in the top 3% of all middle schools statewide. However, within its own elite district, it's important for parents to know that Cupertino Middle's test scores are the lowest among its peers, such as Joaquin Miller Middle and John F. Kennedy Middle. This is partly because it serves a student population with greater economic needs than most other schools in the district.

This context makes one of the school's greatest strengths even more impressive: its exceptional support for specific student groups. Cupertino Middle ranks in the top 10% statewide for its effectiveness with students from low-income families, English learners, and those in special education. While its chronic absenteeism rate is low compared to the state, it is slightly higher than some district peers, which may relate to performance differences. Ultimately, all schools in the Cupertino Union district, including Cupertino Middle, provide a world-class education that significantly outperforms nearby schools in other districts like Sunnyvale or Santa Clara Unified.

Open Quote Good: Students are generally nice and level headed.. there isnt much strutting or cliques going on at this school as far as we can see. Some teachers are nice.. choir, social sciences, science. Some teachers are bad.. especially newer math teacher. Students hate the teacher and the teacher is not very competent and there have been complaints against the teacher as well by parents and students.
Bad: The administration/principal seems very disinterested and not working towards improving the quality of education and the school. School rankings have dropped significantly in the last few years and there seems to be no effort to remediate this. Extended teacher absences are handled very badly with poor communications to students and parents. after school activities get canceled with no notification in the last minute leaving parents scrambling.
