Summary

Foothill Middle is a public middle school in Azusa, California, serving 285 students in grades 7-8. The school faces several key challenges, including a high concentration of Hispanic and low-income students, consistently low academic performance, and a recent spike in chronic absenteeism.

Foothill Middle has a significantly higher Hispanic student population (over 91%) compared to nearby schools, which have more diverse racial compositions. Academically, the school's performance, as measured by Smarter Balanced Assessments and CAST scores, is generally lower than the state and Azusa Unified School District averages, particularly in mathematics. For example, in 2022-2023, only 16.67% of Foothill Middle students were proficient or better in Smarter Balanced Assessments/Mathematics for End of Course, compared to 22.1% for the Azusa Unified School District and 34.62% for the state of California.
