Booth-Fickett Math/Science Magnet School

Public Grades PK, KG-8
Summary

Booth-Fickett Math/Science Magnet School is a public elementary and middle school serving grades PK-8 in Tucson, Arizona, part of the Tucson Unified District. The school has a diverse student population, with a majority of Hispanic and African American students, and a high percentage of students from low-income families.

Despite its focus on math and science, Booth-Fickett consistently underperforms compared to the district and state in standardized test scores, with only 3% of 3rd graders proficient in English Language Arts and 4% of 6th graders proficient in math. The school has a very low statewide ranking, placing in the bottom quarter of Arizona elementary schools, and struggles to effectively serve its diverse student population, with particularly low rankings for African American, Hispanic, and Special Education students. Booth-Fickett has also seen a concerning increase in dropout rates, rising from 2.1% in 2019-2020 to 12.2% in 2021-2022.

In contrast, nearby schools in the Tucson Unified District, such as W. Arthur Sewel Elementary and Annie Kellond Elementary, generally outperform Booth-Fickett across academic metrics, statewide rankings, and student group performance. This suggests that the challenges faced by Booth-Fickett may be unique to the school and not necessarily shared by all schools in the district, potentially indicating a need for more targeted support and resources to address the school's specific issues.

Open Quote I was a student at this school back in the 90s, and I dealt with bullying that one teacher even condoned! The leadership back then was a mess, and from what I’ve heard and read, it still is a crappy school. Close Quote

Open Quote Booth fickett is a pathway to prison not a pathway to education. Booth Fickett administrators do not care about the students and you can tell it is for a paycheck demeanour 100 they allow bullies to run the school and make the victim seem like it is there fault and the one being bullied is the problem. Tucson Police are at the school more than distrcit leaders it is horrible even the monitors and the couches play into the bullying and laugh about it like it is funny to them. Close Quote
