Summary

McCalla Elementary School is a public elementary school serving 765 students in grades PK-5 in Bessemer, Alabama, which is part of the Jefferson County school district.

While McCalla Elementary School has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Alabama elementary schools, it appears to be performing relatively well in serving its diverse student population, ranking in the top 25-40% of Alabama elementary schools for its African American and Hispanic student subgroups. However, the school's overall academic performance, particularly in math and science, is below the Jefferson County and Alabama state averages. Additionally, the school has experienced high rates of chronic absenteeism, which can negatively impact student learning and achievement.

Compared to nearby schools, McCalla Elementary School is generally outperforming some of the other schools in the Bessemer City district, which have lower rankings and academic proficiency levels. This suggests that McCalla Elementary School may be a relatively stronger option for families in the local area, despite its overall challenges. By addressing areas for improvement, such as chronic absenteeism and academic performance, the school may be able to enhance the educational experience and outcomes for its students.

Open Quote Do not send your kids to this school. They have a horrible way of dealing with bullying. My son was bullied to the point of attempted suicide. No one helping. I’ve asked for each affidavit multiple times since pulling him and Mrs Hayes has ignored each request. I walked in to an assembly to a teach SCREAMING at my son for bumping into her - he had just lost his eye and was learning this new normal. My husband confronted the teacher and she had the worst attitude. My son was never safe here. And it’s sad because there are few teachers and staff that are absolute angels in this poor environment.
