Summary

Stewart Middle School is a public school serving about 650 students in grades 6-8 within the Tacoma School District, which faces systemic academic challenges across the region.

The school consistently ranks in the bottom quarter of all Washington middle schools, with proficiency rates in math (21%) and English (34%) below state averages. Compared to nearby schools, Stewart performs better than the lowest-ranked schools like Lochburn Middle School and Perry G Keithley Middle School, but lags behind mid-tier schools such as Wainwright Intermediate School and Hilltop Heritage Middle School. It operates with moderate per-student spending and a student-teacher ratio that is typical for the area.

A notable strength is the school's effectiveness with English Language Learners, where it ranks above average statewide. However, performance varies significantly by grade, with 6th grade English being strongest and 7th grade math being weakest. While many area schools with similar levels of economic need also struggle, Stewart's performance has remained consistently low for nearly a decade, indicating entrenched challenges rather than a temporary setback.

Open Quote Zero support for bullying. Kids are always vaping and clogging toilets making it extremely uncomfortable for other kids to use the restrooms. The "dress code" is a joke. It's not so much a dress code as it is a BUY OUR CLOTHIG ONLY. Dress code is polos etc, not mandatory purchased stewart gear. Not equitable by any means. Kids are completely disregarded by office. We've had nothing buy problems with this school going on 2 years now. Close Quote
