Summary

Kamiakin Middle School is a well-regarded public school serving about 570 students in grades 6-8 within the highly-ranked Lake Washington School District in Kirkland, WA.

Academically, Kamiakin consistently performs above state averages, with recent proficiency rates of 67% in English, 59% in Math, and 65% in Science, earning it a 4-star rating. However, within its own high-achieving district, its scores are below the average, placing it in the middle tier compared to nearby schools like Northstar Middle School or Stella Schola. A key differentiator is its student body; Kamiakin has a higher percentage of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch (over 28%) than many district peers, indicating greater economic diversity and need, which is met with a higher per-student spending level.

The school shows notable strengths, such as strong outcomes for students in special education, but faces a clear challenge in supporting consistent achievement across all student subgroups. When compared to a similar school just over a mile away, Northshore Middle School in the Northshore School District, Kamiakin has comparable test scores and demographics but allocates more resources per student. Overall, Kamiakin is a solid, above-average school that provides a comprehensive education while working to address performance gaps within its diverse community.

Open Quote Our son was bullied at the school daily and the leadership team refused to do anything without a student being willing to “snitch” (as administrators even admitted was the common term, and something they shouldn’t do unless they had proof). Discipline by administration for falsely “snitching” was so severe that students were fearful to report anything. There are some good teachers there, although it’s not a safe or conducive environment for learning. Discipline is inconsistent and severely lacking. The culture is broken. If you are a parent, I encourage you to take a day and observe what goes on in this windowless
cavern. Walk down the hallway during passing period and judge for yourself...a few kicks to the shin and shoulder slams against the lockers (that’s haven’t been used in years) like my son endured daily is all you need to see. Fortunately, the district announced a Principal change, and you may have noticed that has created a snowball effect throughout the district with nearly every middle school swapping Principals heading into the next school year. Thank you for sparking some change Kamiakin or should I say LWSD......finally! Close Quote
