Summary

Kentlake High School is a large public high school serving grades 9-12 in the Kent School District, with an enrollment of over 1,500 students in a diverse community where nearly half qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

Academically, the school presents a mixed picture: it excels at graduating students, with a rate higher than the district and state averages, but standardized test scores show significant challenges, especially in math where proficiency is about half the state average. This math struggle is a trend across most high schools in the Kent School District, with Kentridge High School being a notable exception. Compared to nearby Kentwood High School, which has a similar student population, Kentlake generally ranks lower in statewide comparisons and has a higher dropout rate.

The school's performance has declined in recent years, and it spends more per student than some higher-achieving neighbors like Tahoma Senior High School, located just over two miles away. Tahoma, in the Tahoma School District, has much higher math proficiency and a top-tier ranking, highlighting a stark achievement gap between geographically close schools. Kentlake appears to be at a crossroads, needing to address core academic proficiency while maintaining its strength in helping students reach graduation.

Open Quote As my last child graduates this year, I'd have to say the difference with Dr. Potts versus the previous principal is astonishing. I've been a part of Kentlake community for the past six years with my kids and the kids I mentor. Dr. Potts is outstanding - now the challenge going forward for parents, teachers, community, administration and students alike will be to continue the enthusiasm and energy going forward. Kentlake is improving, but the bar must be set higher, which you can repeat for the entire Kent school district. Close Quote

Open Quote Staff not as involved as I have seen in other districts. Maybe its the pay, Kent school district is the lowest paid district in Washington. I see that much parent/ teacher interaction is mostly done by email if at all. Some teachers expect older or second year subject students to help the younger ones. The problem with this is the older students have their own work to do and it is not their responsibility, not to mention they are teens. And the freshmen students most likely don't know the older ones.

On the good note if you AND your child put forth the effort there are an abundance of programs available at Kentlake. From Academics to Sports to Hobbies, you can keep your child very busy. Just stay on your child's studies and monitor the teacher interaction. As a parent if we are not hands on ourselves how can we expect a teacher to be? Close Quote

Open Quote Inept administration, coupled with teacher apathy results in poor student test scores compared to region and state. Compare to Tahoma school district, Bellevue School district and segregation can be extrapolated. This opinion applies to the middle school and high school levels as I have no experience with the elementary schools in this district. Close Quote
