Summary

Horizon Elementary School is a public Pre-K through 5th grade school in the Kent School District, serving about 408 students in a diverse community where a majority qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

Academically, Horizon's statewide ranking has seen a significant decline over the past decade, now placing it in the lower third of Washington elementary schools. Performance varies widely among different groups of students; for instance, English Language Learners perform relatively well, while a notable gap exists between female and male students. The school spends a mid-range amount per student but has the highest student-teacher ratio among the schools compared, which is an unusual combination. Interestingly, while overall scores are below state averages, the school's math proficiency actually exceeds the district average, and it performs better than several nearby schools with similar or higher levels of student economic need, such as Pine Tree Elementary School and Meadow Ridge Elementary School.

When looking at the broader area, Horizon's performance sits in the middle among nearby schools in the Kent School District, outperforming the lowest-ranked schools but lagging behind top performers like Martin Sortun Elementary School. Some schools in the neighboring Auburn School District, such as Willow Crest Elementary and Lea Hill Elementary School, achieve higher rankings despite similar community demographics. Test scores also show inconsistency between grade levels, with third grade math being a particular strength, suggesting potential areas for targeted focus in curriculum and support.

Open Quote I went to Horizon Elementary School as a child in the 90's and now my daughter is attending this school. I also attending Pinetree at one point and have visited several other Kent Schools and I think Horizon in the best in Kent!! Kent schools in general are subpar. But Horizon has great leadership, encourages school pride and sets the bar high for the kids to reach. They also have a very positive message towards behavior control rather than a negative punishment system. We are renting at the moment and continue to look for real-estate in this school boundary just so we can continue to be apart of this schools community! Close Quote
