Summary

Jenkins Creek Elementary is a public Pre-K through 5th grade school serving about 340 students in Covington, WA, as part of the Kent School District.

The school faces significant academic challenges, with proficiency rates in English and Math consistently below both district and state averages, placing it in the lower percentiles statewide. It serves a student population with a high level of economic need, and while it benefits from a very low student-teacher ratio and higher-than-average per-student spending, these resources have not yet translated into stronger academic outcomes. Notably, the school shows a relative strength in Science, where it outperforms the district average, and it has performed well with English Language Learner students.

Comparisons with nearby schools reveal a complex picture. Within the same district, schools like Grass Lake Elementary and Meridian Elementary achieve much higher academic results with similar or fewer resources. Furthermore, schools in the neighboring Tahoma School District, such as Cedar River Elementary, perform at a dramatically higher level. This suggests that improvement at Jenkins Creek may be achievable by examining the effective practices of these higher-performing schools nearby.

Open Quote I find this school to be quite disappointing. Not only do I have little to no interaction with the teachers of my children, I am also not notified if my child is doing something wrong while at school. I am a very involved parent when it comes to the education of my children, however, I have to work full time so I am unable to volunteer in the classroom as often as I would like. All the information is outdated and old on their website aside from the lunch menu and when there are days off from school so getting updates from that is a huge joke. I guess it's great to know what my children would be having for lunch if I didn't pack them a healthier lunch every day! I receive no status updates on my child's progress at all. It's now late January and aside from one set of parent teacher conferences (in which I learned very little to nothing of what my children were learning), I have received no updates or any sort of report card. And after the first set of parent teacher conferences it became quite clear that the teachers simply do not know my children at all. I am so disappointed that if I can't get my kids moved to a better school I will be taking them out to homeschool them. Close Quote
