Summary

Madrona Elementary is a public Pre-K through 5th grade school in SeaTac, WA, serving 317 students as part of the Highline School District in a high-need community where over three-quarters of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

While the school's overall test scores remain below state averages, it is showing a strong and positive trend of improvement that sets it apart from many nearby schools with similar student populations. Proficiency rates in English, math, and especially science have increased significantly in the 2024-2025 school year, with the school now ranking in the 14th percentile statewide—a notable recovery from being in the bottom percentiles in recent years. In contrast, other high-need schools in the area like Bow Lake Elementary and Midway Elementary have seen their performance stagnate or decline. Madrona also shows particular strength in its upper grades, with fifth-grade math scores that are higher than the district average and outperform several neighboring schools.

The school operates with more resources per student and a lower student-teacher ratio than comparable schools, which may be supporting its improvement. However, a significant and unusual performance gap exists between male and female students that the school will need to address. The challenges Madrona faces are not unique, as seen in similar schools in the Kent School District and Federal Way School District, indicating these are regional educational hurdles. Within its own district, a clear divide exists between higher-performing schools like North Hill Elementary and those serving higher-need communities, placing Madrona in a cluster of schools working to overcome substantial obstacles.

Open Quote Madrona.... I have several kids and only one of my step kids attended Madrona. She missed almost a whole year of school by the time she was in third grade with absences and tardies when she lived at her moms and the school sent home two letters to her mom during that whole time frame. She spent almost two years catching up when she moved in with us. I will say that the music teachers at Madrona are amazing but the parent involvement is horrible so the teachers and rest of the staff i am sure dont feel very supported. People in this community need to step up and get involved with their kids lives! Close Quote

Open Quote Umm....all they do is worry about their uniform. They do nothing to improve students' WASL scores either. Close Quote
