Summary

Hazel Valley Elementary is a public Pre-K through 5th grade school serving 469 students in Burien, Washington, as part of the Highline School District, and it faces significant academic challenges with state rankings and test scores that have been declining for years.

Academically, the school's proficiency rates in English, math, and science are well below state and district averages, placing it in the bottom 10% of all Washington elementary schools. A closer look reveals inconsistent performance across different student groups and grade levels; for instance, support for English Language Learners is a critical area of concern, while services for students in special education have shown recent improvement. Notably, the school spends more per student than several nearby schools, including White Center Heights Elementary and the very similar Cedarhurst Elementary, yet achieves comparable or weaker results.

When compared to other schools in the area, Hazel Valley's steady decline contrasts with the improvement seen at schools like Shorewood Elementary, which serves a similar community. The school's performance drops sharply in upper grades, suggesting learning gaps may widen over time. While the broader Highline School District faces challenges, the existence of higher-performing schools with similar demographics nearby indicates that improvement at Hazel Valley is possible with targeted strategies.

Open Quote I have a 3rd grader at Hazel Valley and I love our experiences so far. All the teachers I have met have been competent, kind, respectful, aware and love kids. I have enjoyed working with the staff in many areas and found them all to be at the highest level of care. The principal is humble, competent and fights for the rights of all her students. She also is personable and makes effort to meet all the students and their families. This school has made a huge difference to our family. I highly recommend this school to others. Close Quote
