Summary

Shuksan Middle School is a public school serving about 600 students in grades 6 through 8 in the Bellingham School District in Washington state.

Academically, Shuksan is on an upward trend but currently performs below the state average and significantly below other middle schools in its own district, such as Kulshan Middle School and Fairhaven Middle School. For example, in the 2024-2025 school year, 44.7% of Shuksan students were proficient in English Language Arts, compared to over 62% at Fairhaven and Kulshan. The gap is even wider in math. However, science is a relative strength for Shuksan, where its proficiency rate is much closer to the district average.

Shuksan has a higher percentage of students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds than some district peers and spends more per student. It also benefits from a slightly lower student-to-teacher ratio, meaning smaller average class sizes. When compared to middle schools in neighboring districts like Horizon Middle School in Ferndale School District or Blaine Middle School, its performance is more similar, but the large gap within the Bellingham district is notable.

Open Quote This school has gotten a bad rap which it does not deserve. My daughter has found some great teachers and some great friends at this school. Her grades are not great, but I don't attribute this to the school. There are plenty of extra-curricular activities, and plenty of parents who care about the well-being of their children. I believe that public school is what you make it. All teachers in public school everywhere are being stretched to their limits right now. Close Quote
