The school stands out for its remarkable stability, ranking in the 90th-94th percentile among Washington middle schools for ten straight years. While nearby schools like Tyee Middle School and Odle Middle School rank higher, Tillicum excels at serving all students well, showing strong and improving results for English Language Learners, Hispanic students, and students from lower-income families. Its academic proficiency, at roughly 70% in English and 65% in Math, is solidly above state averages, with scores that improve each year in English Language Arts.

An interesting comparison within the same district is Highland Middle School, which, despite having more spending per student and smaller classes, struggles academically, highlighting how outcomes can vary within a district. Open Quote School places too much academic pressure on the kids to get their "higher test scores." Teachers need to be better supporting the students academically, need to be much better communicating with parents (not answering emails for weeks, not updating grades for months) makes it really difficult as parents to support academically at home. Bullying can be a problem -- teachers need to pay more attention in class and during lunch. Close Quote
