Summary

Highland Middle School is a public middle school serving 589 students in grades 6-8 within the highly-rated Bellevue School District in Washington state.

Despite being part of this top-performing district, Highland faces significant academic challenges, with student proficiency rates in core subjects like math (25%) and English (35%) falling well below both district and state averages. The school's statewide ranking has declined sharply over the past decade, and it now serves a student population with a high level of economic need, with over 60% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch—a rate more than triple that of other middle schools in Bellevue.

This creates a striking contrast with nearby schools. For example, Odle Middle School, less than a mile away, ranks in the state's top tier with proficiency rates above 75%. Highland receives more funding per student and has smaller class sizes than these higher-performing neighbors, highlighting a complex situation where additional resources have not yet translated into improved academic outcomes for its students.

Open Quote I have two children currently at Highland and my oldest attended several years ago. I am extremely happy with this school, overall. I have found the teachers to be exceptional. My children are very comfortable there and have not had any complaints about a single teacher. The majority of teachers have been very responsive to parents and students, and the previous principal was fantastic. We love the diversity of the school as well. Close Quote
