Summary

Granby Elementary is a public elementary school in Norfolk, Virginia, serving 486 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Norfolk City Public Schools district, which is ranked 109 out of 129 districts in the state and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Granby Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Virginia elementary schools, with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger for most of the past 10 years. The school's academic performance, as measured by SOL (Standards of Learning) test scores, is significantly below the state and district averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in 2024-2025, the school's 3rd grade math proficiency rate was 65.22%, compared to 72.89% for the state and 58.42% for the Norfolk City Public Schools district. Granby Elementary also has consistently high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 15.7% to 20.2% over the past few years, which is significantly higher than the state average.

Compared to nearby schools in the Norfolk City Public Schools district, such as Larchmont Elementary and Willard Elementary, Granby Elementary's performance is generally lower, with these schools having higher academic proficiency rates and better SchoolDigger ratings. Despite Granby Elementary's relatively high per-student spending of around $10,000 and a low student-teacher ratio, these factors do not appear to be translating into improved academic outcomes, suggesting that the school may require a comprehensive, multi-faceted approach to address its challenges.

Open Quote Don't let the numbers fool you. Granby Elementary has great teachers and a caring principal. The teachers take time to individualize their education for each student. The principal knows each student by name and cares about them all. They have great clubs and resources - chess club, robotics club, drum club, drama club, violin, Girls on the run, and many more. There are frequent field trips , plenty of school dances, movie nights, and community education programs. They even have lessons in the school garden. It is economically , racially, and culturally diverse just like the community in which it is located. My child is growing and learning here. Go bulldogs ! Close Quote
