Summary

Crestwood Middle is a public middle school in Chesapeake, Virginia, serving 560 students in grades 6-8. The school faces several challenges, including lower academic performance, higher chronic absenteeism, and a high percentage of economically disadvantaged students compared to the surrounding area.

Crestwood Middle's test scores are consistently lower than the Chesapeake City Public Schools district and the state of Virginia, with only 45.99% of 8th graders proficient in math in 2024-2025, compared to 64.22% for the district and 50.48% for the state. The school also has higher chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 12.0% to 19.3% over the past few years, and a very high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, from 52% to 82.5%.

While Crestwood Middle's per-student spending is higher than nearby schools in the district, such as Great Bridge Middle, Hugo A. Owens Middle, and Greenbrier Middle, which have higher test scores and lower chronic absenteeism, the school's statewide ranking has steadily declined over the past several years, from 114 out of 413 Virginia middle schools in 2017-2018 to 319 out of 419 in 2024-2025. These challenges suggest the need for targeted interventions and support to improve student outcomes at Crestwood Middle.
