Summary

Desertaire Elementary is a public elementary school in El Paso, Texas, serving 513 students in grades PK-5 and part of the Ysleta Independent School District. This high-performing school consistently outperforms both the district and the state of Texas in academic achievement, particularly in reading, math, and science.

Desertaire Elementary's strong performance extends across diverse student subgroups, including African American, Hispanic, and White students, as well as English Language Learners, Special Education students, and those from low socioeconomic backgrounds. The school's rankings for these subgroups are consistently in the top quartile of Texas elementary schools, indicating it effectively serves a diverse population. Over time, Desertaire has steadily improved, moving from 2,466 out of 4,578 Texas elementary schools in 2020-2021 to 566 out of 4,651 in 2024-2025, maintaining a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

While Desertaire outperforms nearby schools within the Ysleta Independent School District, such as Dolphin Terrace Elementary and North Star Elementary, its performance is more on par with or slightly better than some schools in the neighboring El Paso Independent School District, like Coach Archie Duran Elementary, Dr. Joseph Torres Elementary, and Newman Elementary. Desertaire's higher per-student spending and relatively low student-teacher ratio may contribute to its academic success, despite serving a population with a high socioeconomic need.

Open Quote The children need more supervision from the time they get out of the class and get off the bus going home. They have a major bullying problem on the bus and at school. Seems to be a big lack of communication between our teacher and the parents. Close Quote
