Summary

Jean McClung Middle is a public middle school in the Fort Worth Independent School District, serving 578 students in grades 6-8. The school has consistently ranked in the bottom 10-15% of Texas middle schools over the past 10 years, with a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Jean McClung Middle faces significant challenges in terms of academic performance, with students consistently scoring well below state and district averages, particularly in mathematics. For example, in the 2024-2025 school year, only 29.94% of 6th-grade students are projected to be proficient in reading, compared to 38.24% in the district and 54.21% statewide. In 8th-grade math, just 18.85% of students are expected to meet proficiency standards, compared to 30.79% in the district and 44.81% across Texas. The school also has relatively high dropout rates, ranging from 3-4.1% in recent years, which are higher than the district and state averages.

Interestingly, while the nearby Forest Oak Middle and James Middle schools in the Fort Worth ISD also perform poorly on academic measures, some nearby schools in other districts, such as Richland Middle in the Birdville ISD and Young J.H. in the Arlington ISD, demonstrate significantly higher academic performance and lower dropout rates. This suggests that factors beyond just funding, such as school leadership, curriculum, and instructional practices, may play a crucial role in driving student success.

Open Quote The students at this school learn a lot, none of which has to do with academics. They learn how to be bullied, how to fight, how to be ignored by teachers, how to be rude and loud, and how to survive doing the minimum that's required in life. I am very disappointed about this school year experience. The administration doesn't support parent involvement ie no response to calls/emails and hour long waiting periods to meet with the principal. Many fights daily, kids skipping, gang affiliation. No lessons can be taught because classrooms can't be controlled so passing grades are given to the majority with no advancement in learning schoolwork. Close Quote
